Hi, can somebody give me the range of serial numbers of the Nikon D1? I'd like to know how many bodies were ever produced/sold. What would be the highest number? Somewhere around 40.000?

Nico

Hi,
As I recall, they started at 500xxxx and wound up at 503xxxx. Somewhere in the late 502xxxx numbers was when they finally fixed the banding issue. My old D1 was a late 500xxx one, and was also a victim of the bad oscillator that caused the banding.
I don't know if the numbers were sequential or not, though. If they were, then they made over 30,000 of the things.

HIGH PRODUCTION
Looking at the listings on 'bay I see 5037279 up for sale!
So even with gaps, should be at least 35,000 units.
I bought mine two years ago for under $900USD,my number is 5015611
The prices for these things has dropped big time, "Buy it now" prices around $400 USD for roughed-up ones!
Not many listed right now, around 10 units!!

D1 serial #'s
I purchased a D1 (serial #5025651) last summer on E-bay for $475 in the box with all accessories and 3 so, so batteries. The cosmetic condition of the camera was a 8.5 to 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. So far I haven't experienced any malfunctions. The battery issues have been solved with the purchase of a couple of "Battery Barn" replacement batteries (I'm really pleased with the duration of charge I can get out of these). It took awhile getting the post processing results I wanted but now I'm happy with the images this camera can produce.
Thanks, Mike
