An otherwise uneventful evening-thought I peek inside my E2 (serial #5400006)
Under the top cover-the pentaprism is right at the front, there is a long tube leading to the eyepiece

The bottom, metal plate wouldn't come off-I should think the top & sides are screwed to this, rather than the bottom screwed onto them.
I took more photo's but they didn't come out. Will post more/different views if I venture into it again.
BTW The screw out eyepiece is just plain glass-I presume it pulls out depending if you wear glasses (like binoculars)
