Nikon D2H goes to pieces

Post by NikonWeb »

"If you’re curious like me, you’ve wondered what’s inside your camera, especially a pro DSLR. So, of course, I couldn’t resist the idea of a “teardown project” with this broken Nikon D2H. I really wanted to see if I was up to the task of replacing the shutter – get it working again, not just tear it apart."

And a thread on dpreview.com, which may or may not contain anything useful:

Oooh!! I can't wait to see when I get home. I've replaced the LCD on my D1x and started trying to get into the viewfinder assembly (somethings out of whack--the sweet spot where the entire field is in focus is super small). This may be helpful!

Please post some photos if you decide to open your D1x. Good luck!

Hi,

One thing that comes to mind is to actually disconnect the various flex films, not to let them hang loose still connected. The Kapton they're made from is pretty strong stuff, but if you accidentally put too much force into one, it'll tear like it was made from tissue paper.

Also, release the flex connectors first rather than just pull the flex out. The contacts have a very thin film of gold on them and pulling free under tension will scrape thru the gold. That means that the nickel under the gold is exposed and will slowly oxidize. This means a bad contact will form later on...

The camera looks to be a lot easier to work on that I'd have thought, too.

As far as the die-cut grip adhesive strips go, back when we were putting them back onto the D1 series, those were available from Nikon Japan whilst Nikon USA only had the grip + adhesive available in a kit. Anyone know if the D2 series grip adhesive is sourceable from Nikon Japan? That might be something for someone to get and re-sell on eBay....

Later!

Very informative.
I'd personally be horrified to open one of these things, I don't have any tools either.

He got it working again.
Another Nikon revived :D
