In an attempt to figure out how many E-series cameras were made, here's a list of serial numbers I've collected so far. I've indicated if the cameras are owned by forum members (fm), or found on eBay.

Please post additional serial numbers as you find them, and I'll update the list.

Note that all serial numbers, except for two, are of the XX000XX type. Apparently, the first digit is the last digit of the year (e. g. 5 -> 1995), the second digit will be the quarter of the year (no number higher than 4). More info in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=375

Hi,

Well, the Fujix DS-565 arrived this morning. It's serial number 92000003.

Probably a typo. I believe they should all be 7 digits, typically in the xx000xx range.

I'm away on business, so I can't verify the numbers until next week.

I'll re-check those numbers, but I'd guess I've left a zero out of the 2nd number, should be 7300049 and 5200007.

I like to note that Fujix DS-565 serial number 9200005 is mine!
Stan, did you ever get 9200003 working?
I wonder what the serial number was for the other one the florida seller sold to Nxsdream?? Or was it somebody else?

Hi,

Yes, I did get the 565 working by pulling the power switch/shutter button assembly out of my E2. That's all that was wrong with the 565. Well, it needed a little cleaning of the front element in the ROS and such, but everything does work properly. :)

I also found out that the power switch in the F4 is *not* the same as in the E-series, even though it looked like it would work based on the exploded view diagrams in the F4 service manual. :(

BTW, If anyone finds themsleves in need of any F4 parts - except for the now screwed up power switch from my attempt to 'make it work' in the E2 - from an F4 with MB-21, let me know. It was a dead F4 off of eBay, so it wasn't really a loss. I'm currently using it as an 'optical checker' for Nikon lenses. ;)

So, I now need a really trashed E-Series unit to swipe the power switch from to put the E2 back in order. The switch will stay in the 565 at this point, since I have a couple of uses for one of these things, and the 565 is the better choice to actually shoot with (faster ROS, buffer, 3 fps, etc).

Next on the list: stick some new cells into my E-series battey packs.

Stan

I have been looking at this thread for months trying to make some sense with this numbering system
Could it be that Nikon went retro and started the E series numbering system like the old times :?:
First digit being the year of manufature :?:
With the original Nikons the second digit was the month of manufacture but that doesn't make sense with the numbers we have collected.
Second digit being the batches :?:
As you note the newer the model the higher the serial number
E2's start with 5 for 1995
E3S's start with 8 or 9 for 1998 and 1999
I know its a wild guess but its the best I could think of.

Hi,

Hmmm. Makes a lot of sense, that does!

I can clearly see the march of years in those numbers. 1995 thru 1999.

The batch makes sense, but I think it means Quarters of the year. I don't see any second digits over '4'. For a low-production product, this would make sense instead of months.

I also see only '1' and '2' for the 'year 9', which would make a lot of sense. The D1 was rocketing off into the distance by mid-1999. They'd have been 'chewing up' the parts stock, working to get out of the E-series before they got stuck with a lot of costly bits. Obviously, once the D1 hit full production steam, the E3 was done for. ;)

I recall that when I was looking hard at getting my first DSLR, which was late 1999, there were still new E3 units to be had. In fact, the D1 had a waiting list (I got mine in late April for a mid-January order) and I was offered an E3 as a D1 price at the time - the salesman gave me the old Full Frame vs. Half-Frame argument. :p

I opted for a used E2 for $750 and waited for my $5000 D1. :) :) :)

Hello,

I discovered this very interesting forum some days ago, thanks to Wolfi, who is also member of another french forum.

So that you can update your list, I own E3 N° 8400043.

I was exceptionally lucky to buy it last year in mint condition, in the original box (also for battery charger PS-3) for the incredible price of .... 75 €, in a photo fair close to Paris. I had never heard about this machine before, and I "felt in love" of it immediately when I saw it.

You know, in 2004, a 1.3 M pixels SLR didn't interest any "serious user", except crazy people as we are. Thanks a lot to the marketing guys and their pixels race who push users to replace their machines every 2 years and allow us to get marvellous cameras at such a low price.

Unfortunately, but not surpisingly, the battery was out of order and I just could test it with the power supply. Can we still find batteries at a correct price ?

Thanks for having created this forum.
