The D1 is an original design Nikon digital SLR, not a hybrid adaptation.
Designed from the ground up for the demanding task of photojournalism, The D1
lets photographers make a seamless transition from film to digital.

High digital image quality is rendered by the camera's large 23.7 x 15.6mm
2.74 megapixel CCD, producing ultra-high definition 2,012 x 1,324 pixel
images. A super-thin infrared ray-cutting lithium niobate (LiNB) Low-Pass
Filter is located directly in front of the CCD, and optimal signal processing
is delivered by Nikon's original algorithm set.

The new Nikon D1 features fast 0.5 second bootup; a responsive.05 second
shutter release lag time (pegged from the time the shutter release button is
lightly pressed), and the ability to shoot 4.5 frames per second in bursts of
up to 21 consecutive shots (the fastest rate of any digital camera). For
professionals in high-pressure, high profile shooting situations the D1
delivers "the money-shot" and ensures that now-or- never news photos,

Digital-ness, Camera-ness and Nikon Total Image Quality
The D1X and D1H were developed with a combination of what Nikon refers to
as "camera-ness" and "digital-ness." Camera-ness refers to the ergonomic
design, created to allow photographers to follow their instinct, and to feel
totally comfortable as they use the camera.

Digital-ness implies the image recording, as well as post-picture making
processes such as saving, file transfer, transmission and issues of assuring
necessary image quality for each picture's intended use; all of which are

Both D1X and D1H have nearly identical camera-ness. When shooting,
photographers will hardly notice differences among the camera models.
Controls, operation, weight, balance and other handling characteristics are

setting for any given scene, using analysis of values from each of the three
sources. The D2H's white balance system has a wide color range of 2,500K to
10,000K, and is able to detect and compensate for artificial light flicker.

For additional convenience, the D2H features five preset-memory settings
that can be alphanumerically labeled in the camera so photographers can store
white balance settings for venues they frequent, like stadiums, indoor courts,
etc. They can even extract white balance settings from a picture taken by the
camera, and using the white balance preset functions, apply it to subsequent
images.

Fast, Accurate, Responsive -- It's All About Timing

The D2H is the world's most responsive digital SLR camera. It has
virtually no start-up lag time, and is ready to shoot the instant it is turned
on. Its shutter lag time is a mere 37ms -- the lowest among all digital
cameras, and comparable to Nikon's legendary F5(TM) 35mm film SLR camera. The
D2H is capable of a continuous shooting rate of up to 8 frames per second at
full resolution and all file formats and ISO settings. The frame rate remains
consistent when any combination of the D2H's focus points is selected, or even

All New Autofocus System: Nikon Multi-Cam 2000(TM) technology

The D2H features the new Nikon Multi-Cam 2000(TM) next generation
autofocus system that is not only fast enough to keep up with the camera's
rapid continuous frame rate, but it is remarkably accurate in detecting focus
even in challenging situations, including dim lighting conditions as low as
EV -1. This new autofocus system consists of 11 AF sensors, 9 of which are
cross-type sensors laid out consistently with the rule of thirds for
composition, and an additional two sensors placed at the horizontal ends of
the frame. This ensures that the D2H has over 75% horizontal autofocus
coverage -- the widest cross-type sensor coverage in its class. Photographers
have the option of setting preferences for AF sensor selection, including
choosing each sensor individually or combining them into groups to ensure
ideal coverage in diverse picture taking compositions. The D2H also features
enhanced Dynamic AF and a new Group Dynamic AF detection option, as well as
Focus Tracking with Lock-On(TM) technology to ensure razor sharp pictures.

Taking the D2H's remarkable autofocus system one step further is its
capability for 'extreme focus detection.' A typical camera can detect focus in
a scene up to a certain 'defocus' limit, beyond which the camera enters a
scanning mode. During this mode, the camera's autofocus system scans through
the entire focusing range of the lens before detecting a focus point. This
process can waste precious time, especially when photographing high-speed
action. The D2H's autofocus system can detect focus in scenes with about twice
the defocus limit of other cameras, ensuring more accurate and consistent
operation.

High Speed Image Transfer For Faster Workflow

Not only does the D2H process images faster, it is also equipped with
high-speed image transfer options that ensure the quickest transfer from
camera to workflow. The D2H has Lexar Media's(TM) Write Accelerated (WA)
technology standard, allowing faster write-to-card speeds when used with
Lexar's WA enabled CompactFlash(R) cards. The D2H features Hi-Speed USB 2.0
remote connectivity as well as compatibility with Wi-Fi for image transfer
over a wireless Local Area Network (LAN).

Wi-Fi Connectivity

For added speed, convenience, performance and potential, the D2H features
integrated Wi-Fi connectivity when used with the optional WT-1 accessory.
Based on standard IEEE-802.11b technology, the WT-1 can be attached to the
bottom of the D2H, and connected to the camera via its USB 2.0 port. It
transmits images via a local area network to a host computer access-point
using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) method, and can wirelessly transfer data
over a radius of approximately 30 meters (100 feet) with a supplied one-inch
antenna. An optional antenna is available for an extended range of up to
150 meters (approx. 490 feet). To ensure secure wireless data transmission,
the D2H offers multiple levels of security including Wired Equivalent Privacy
(WEP) encryption, MacAddress, and ESS-ID. The camera and optional WT-1
accessory can be set to various transmission configurations, including the
option to save images on the CompactFlash card and transmit simultaneously.
All the configurations and settings for wireless transmission can be written
separately in a computer text file and applied to multiple cameras by
downloading the file to a CompactFlash card and loading the settings into each
camera. The WT-1 draws its power supply from the D2H battery, consuming
roughly 20% of its charge during normal usage. Its robust magnesium chassis
construction and water resistant connectors match the camera's construction
and durability.

Comfortable, Logical Design for Faster Handling

The D2H features significant improvements in user interface design that
facilitate faster and easier handling of the camera. The most noticeable
difference on the back of the D2H is its oversized LCD monitor that is
50% larger than previous models and centrally positioned on the camera's back.

Nikon's Sensor Formats: FX and DX

Nikon's digital SLR cameras based on its DX-format sensor have been
hugely successful and represent an excellent combination of high image
quality, size and value. And while the DX-format has been widely accepted
by professional photographers and photo enthusiasts around the world, there
is an increasing demand among professionals for a digital SLR camera that
features higher ISO sensitivity, wider dynamic range and offers the same
relationship between picture angle and depth-of-field that were the
hallmarks of the 35mm film format.

Responding to this demand, Nikon has developed the D3 as its first
digital SLR camera that features the Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor to meet
the real- world requirements of its professional customers. The D3 delivers
full resolution 12.1 megapixel images at up to nine frames per second when
used with conventional AF-Nikkor lenses. When used with DX Nikkor lenses,
the D3 automatically switches to the DX-format mode that uses a cropped
portion of the sensor to generate 5.1 megapixel resolution images. While in
this mode, the D3 automatically masks the portion of the viewfinder that

The Most Intelligent Nikon Ever

The D3 introduces a range of innovative technologies and features that
significantly improve the accuracy, control and performance professional
photographers can get from their equipment. Nikon's exclusive Scene
Recognition System advances the use of Nikon's acclaimed 1,005-segment
sensor to recognize colors and light patterns that help the camera
determine the subject and the type of scene being photographed, before an
image is captured. This information is also used to improve the accuracy of
auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance detection functions in the
D3. For example, the camera can track moving subjects better in all
directions and by identifying them it can also automatically select focus
points faster and with greater accuracy. It can also analyze scene
highlights and more accurately determine exposure, as well as infer light
sources to deliver more accurate white balance.

The D3 incorporates Nikon's new Multi-CAM 3500FX auto focus module that
features an intelligent array of 15 cross-type sensors and 36 horizontal
sensors. These sensors can either be used individually or in groups, with
the option for Single Area AF mode and Dynamic AF modes using groups of
either 9, 21 or all 51 focus points. The system also features 3D Focus
Tracking with automatic focus point switching that takes advantage of all
51 AF points as it uses color and light information to accurately track the
subject. Nikon's new Scene Recognition System and improved focus algorithms
also contribute to the impressive performance of the new 51-point AF
system.

Nikon's new Picture Control System makes it easy for users of all
experience levels to select and apply adjustments to how their pictures are
rendered and create optimized settings to suit their individual
preferences. The same settings produce consistent picture tone, even when
using different camera bodies. The Picture Control System offers four basic
setting options - Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome. These can be
directly modified for easy adjustment and customization of image
parameters, such as sharpening, tone compensation, brightness and
saturation. Photographers can customize and store up to nine customized
options in the D3 and export up to 99 to a CF memory card, enabling
photographers to share settings among multiple D3 cameras.

Taking a cue from the popularity of Nikon's D-Lighting technology, the
D3 features a new Active D-Lighting mode that, when enabled, provides
remarkable real-time highlight and shadow correction with optimized image
contrast. Active D-Lighting produces broader tone reproduction in both
shadows and highlights by controlling highlights and exposure compensation
while applying localized tone control technology to achieve a more pleasing
level of contrast across the entire image. And because the advantages of
Active D-Lighting are applied as images are captured, image editing time
can be shortened.

The D3's LiveView feature offers two modes for confirming subjects and
composition on the new 920,000-dot, high-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor
while shooting. The Tripod mode is designed for precise focus and accuracy
when the camera is on a stable platform and the subject is not moving. In
this mode, the camera focuses on the subject using focal-plane contrast and
any point on the LCD screen can be selected as the focus point for the
picture. The second mode, called Handheld mode, allows photographers to use
the camera's conventional TTL focusing system, with all 51-points and 15
cross-type points available. When using this mode, the camera activates
focusing immediately when the shutter button is pressed, to ensure accurate
focus.

The Fastest Camera in its Class

The D3 has the fastest reaction times of any camera in its class. Its
shutter release time lag is only 37 milliseconds, and its start-up time is
approximately 0.12 seconds. It is capable of continuously shooting
approximately nine frames per second in full resolution with FX-format, up
to 64 consecutive frames in JPEG, Normal compression. For NEF (RAW) files,
the D3 can shoot up to 20 or up to 17 consecutive frames depending on
whether it is set to 12-bit or 14-bit images. When using a DX-format lens,
the camera automatically switches to DX-format mode, adjusting the
resolution of the camera to 5.1 megapixels. In the DX-format mode,
photographers also have the opportunity to increase the speed at which the
camera can take pictures by limiting the auto exposure and going up to 10
frames per second or limiting both auto exposure and auto focus and going
up to 11 frames per second.

Refined Ergonomics and Usability

The D3 reflects Nikon's most streamlined, functional and aesthetically
pleasing layout in a digital SLR camera, all designed so photographers can
take pictures with less fatigue, greater accuracy and comfort.

The camera's viewfinder provides virtually 100 percent coverage for
accurate framing, while an ultra-high definition, 920,000-dot VGA LCD
screen on the rear of the camera displays images with vivid color and
clarity. The 170-degree wide viewing angle makes composing shots using the
LCD screen in LiveView mode easy. The D3 also features a unique Virtual
Horizon digital level sensor that indicates the camera's alignment relative
to the true horizon on the rear LCD screen or in the viewfinder.

The D3 also features two CompactFlash(TM) card slots that can be used
for consecutive recording (overflow), simultaneous recording (backup),
separating recording of RAW and JPEG files or even copying pictures between
the two cards. Images can be displayed directly from the camera to a
high-definition monitor using the camera's HDMI port and an optional cable.

The D3 is designed for professional use in demanding conditions. The
exterior of the D3 is crafted of magnesium alloy and the camera's shutter
mechanism is tested to 300,000-cycle releases. The 3.0-inch LCD is
strengthened with tempered glass and the D3's comprehensive array of rubber
gaskets and seals protect vulnerable entry points from dust and moisture.

(Oct. 14, 2009) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the FX-format D3S D-SLR, providing professional photographers with a powerful tool that redefines the boundaries of digital SLR versatility, while maintaining the strength of superior image quality and high speed performance inherited from the groundbreaking D3. The D3S enables not only new opportunities in low-light photography, but also provides photographers with added shutter speed and aperture freedom with a base ISO sensitivity range from ISO 200 to a remarkable 12,800. Additionally, expanded ISO equivalent settings up to a staggering 102,400 are available, enabling photographers to create images previously thought impossible.

Additionally, the D3S features a built-in monaural microphone, augmented by a stereo microphone input, which is perfect for hot-shoe microphone mounting or the use of wireless microphones for interviews or spot news.

Photographers and film makers alike will appreciate the full aperture control from a wide f/1.4 to f/16, as the FX-format sensor renders low-noise movie clips with outstanding clarity, aided by the large selection of renowned NIKKOR lenses to produce a dramatic depth of field. High Sensitivity Movie Mode allows the utilization of the entire ISO range to capture otherwise hidden details in challenging lighting conditions, more effectively than cameras with smaller sensors. Now, users can benefit from available natural light for applications such as telling a story in a journalistic style in the field or to create a gritty film noir masterpiece without CGI post production. While recording, users also have the ability to control exposure, and will enjoy the added benefits of improved contrast-detect type AF while in Tripod Live View mode.

Performance and Features Defining Versatility
The emergence of the D3 in 2007 provided photographers with a unique fusion of ruggedness, speed, versatility and image quality—characteristics which the D3S now takes even further. Photographers are able to capture images at 9 frames per second (fps) in the FX-format or at up to 11 fps in the DX crop mode, while data is transferred through a 16-bit pipeline for optimal processing speed. Additionally, the buffer has been increased, enabling continuous bursts approximately twice that of the D3 in the JPEG, TIFF or NEF (RAW) formats. Files can also be captured in either 12- or 14-bit compressed or uncompressed formats to maintain the images data integrity. Photographers can also select the new 1.2x crop mode for a modest telephoto effect, while minimally impacting resolution, as photos are captured at approximately 8.4 megapixels (9 fps).

The D3S also features two UDMA compatible CompactFlash™ card slots that can be used for consecutive recording (overflow), simultaneous recording (backup), separating recording of RAW and JPEG files or even copying pictures between the two cards. One or both can also be designated for data-heavy D-Movie recording. Images can be displayed directly from the camera to a High Definition monitor using the camera's HDMI port and an optional cable.

The D3S features Nikon’s exclusive Multi-CAM 3500FX focus module, with 51 AF points, 15 cross type sensors and 36 horizontal sensors that easily track and lock onto moving subjects, delivering the same fast and accurate AF performance that helped make the D3 immediately successful. Users can select any of the AF points, making it easy to consistently attain accurate focus, frame after frame. Additionally, three AF-area modes – Single point, Dynamic-area AF and Auto-area AF – are available to maximize the use of the 51 focus points by selecting the most suitable one to match subject conditions. AF is also available in one of two Live View modes, including a phase detection handheld mode and a tripod mode. While in Live View, the graphic indication of a virtual horizon is also available, making it easier than ever to confirm camera orientation.

To alleviate another kind of noise, the D3S also features a Quiet Shutter Mode which substantially reduces the sound of the camera’s mirror-down cycle, which is perfect for shooting in sensitive environments, such as movie sets, meetings, ceremonies, or while photographing wildlife.

The D3S’ accelerated Scene Recognition System analyzes information from the 1,005-pixel RGB light sensor for use in auto exposure, auto white balance detection and autofocus calculations. Nikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II assists in ensuring accurate exposures, even in the most challenging lighting conditions. Instantly evaluating each scene before capture, input data from the system's sensor is automatically referenced against an internal database of more than 30,000 images derived from actual photographs to calculate correct exposure values. Active D-Lighting (ADL), used in combination with 3D Matrix Metering II, helps to determine proper exposure, and creates realistic contrast while compensating for lost shadows and highlights. Photographers can also use ADL bracketing for up to five frames of ADL compensation.

To further enhance each photographer's expression of personal style, Nikon’s Picture Control System allows selection of Picture Control settings including Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome. Additionally, adjustment can be made to Picture Controls to image sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation, hue and more. Photographers then have the flexibility to save up to nine personalized Picture Controls on camera and 99 additional Picture Controls externally.
