All Kodak Nikon models to date

Post by NikonWeb »

The following list was recently posted in another thread (Early DCS models - how many were made?) but I think it deserves a thread of its own. Great reference. It even includes a few unknown models (to me, anyway), like a digital Nikonos! Thank you Wilfred and Phil!

UPDATE - MARCH 2009: There's also a comprehensive list of models - and tons of other, interesting information, in this historical Kodak document: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=373

- Jarle

Wilfred was compliling a list of all DCS cameras - theres some prototypes and secret squirrel stuff that never hit the public market but this is pretty much every nikon based camera

One More, for this thread.

DCS200IR, ~$12,400

The color filter wheel attachment was not cheap, I think >$4K. The 7-pin comnector on the DCS4xx controls the filter-wheel. I think the DCS200 connected through the SCSI port. A group down the hall from me almost bought one, but went with the color model instead. The acquisition times for the color wheel were very long. The DCS200 cameras takes almost 3 seconds to store an image to disk.

What is the difference between the NC2000 and NC2000e?

I know that Kodak came out with a new version of the KAF1600 with extended sensitivity in visible; the KAF1603 (think that is it). Also, I notice that my Kodak id's itself as a 420D. What do these "extensions" mean?

NC2000 vs. 2000e

Hi Brian,

"Kodak was the first company to make available a sensor/circuitry upgrade for a digital SLR, back in the mid-90’s. The camera was the NC2000; upgrading it to an NC2000e reduced the noise at higher ISO settings and doubled the burst depth from 6 frames to 12."

"..the original version was called "NC2000" which used a Nikon N90s/F90 body chassis (retailed at USD10,500) and an updated version, NC2000e with a newer N90s/F90x was introduced in 1997 (USD17,000-00 new). Both models are quite identical except the update has a more refined ISO settings and image output capabilities working at lower light level."

I'll bet they swapped out the KAF-1300 from the original to the KAF-1301 which doubled the sensitivity in the visible region. That would reduce noise and cut down on the "IR" magenta cast problem by one-stop.

The KAF 1.3M and 1.6M CCD arrays are still in production and go for >$2K. Too bad that Kodak used an epoxy that is stronger than the glass, a lot of these cameras would be converted to IR and used for astronomical use.

I'm Back!

I noticed that the DCS200ir is not listed under DCS200 models. I have one, and it even has DCS200ir on the SN plate. I talked to Kodak when the DCS200 came out, and asked them to make it. A few months later, they called back and told me the Army wanted the same thing and that they were going to do a custom run of 50 CCD's without the IR cutoff filter. I wonder how many actually became DCS200ir's, and how many went into DCS420ir's.

But I have one, at least!

And the resolution from the RAW image is 1536x1024. The Twain driver cut some of the pixels off. My FORTRAN code does not.
